Two of Virginia’s local fire fighters who pride themselves on doing more are going above and beyond for MDA this year to kick off the Fill the Boot Season! Fire medic Joe Jarman and Lt. Travis Saunders with the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Department and Local #2801 will be hiking between Neptune’s Park in Virginia Beach and the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond. In all, from March 24-29, the two will travel 130 miles over an estimated six days, with stops to eat and rest at fire stations along the way. Each day’s journey will be progressively longer in distance, with guest walkers joining from various fire departments and, hopefully, interaction with the communities the fire fighters are visiting.
Joe and Travis’ goal is to spark curiosity from bystanders within each community, on social media and on line to raise awareness and funds for MDA throughout their journey. It is also MDA’s goal to recognize and give thanks to the 65 year relationship and tradition that the MDA and the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) have. Over the last 65 years fire fighters across this country have raised over $650 million dollars to help fund our services and research.
On the last day, March 29, they are inviting individuals impacted by neuromuscular disease, as well as other fire fighters from across the state, to join them in their final “MDA Mile.”
“I would love for people who are directly affected by muscular dystrophy, family, friends and fire departments to walk that final mile with us. I don’t want it to be about me. I want it to be about us and the cause. We need to show that we are together in this, and we can finish it together “ says Joe Jarman.
To support the March for MDA you can make a donation in honor of Joe and Travis’ efforts. Your donation helps to support the MDA mission of transforming the lives of people living with neuromuscular disease through research, treatments and care.
